Importation of Used Household goods, furniture and personal effects

Permanent Residence Permit holders are allowed to import used household goods, furniture and personal effects within 6 months of taking up residency, or within 6 months of the issue of the residence permit. Temporary Residents may also import all their used personal effects duty free. Non- residents require an import licence to import their personal effects and are subject to customs duty.

Importation of Motor Vehicles

Permanent residents may import a motor vehicle without paying V.A.T. (duty free) as long as it originates from the E.U. Registration fees vary from 11% to 16.5% have to be paid depending on the cubic capacity of the vehicle, and also the owner has to prove he has been the owner for the last 6 months.

Importation of Pets

To import pets into Malta one must apply to the Director of Agriculture for a licence issued by the Government veterinary services, Albertown, Marsa. Tel: (00356) 21244236 Quarantine periods vary from 21 days to 6 months depending on the country or origin.
